Online Students and Distance Learning Library Services

Welcome. Distance Learners/Online Students are allowed use of Hibbing Community College's library resources and services without having to come to campus.

Setting Up Necessary Accounts

In order to access subscription databases or request books or articles, you will need to set up certain accounts.

  1. Your HCC Student Photo ID card is needed to use and access library resources. On your HCC student ID is a barcode. This barcode serves as your library card. you will need it to request, check out, or interlibrary loan books and articles.  To receive an HCC student ID, contact HCC Student Services. A HCC Student ID is issued upon completion of registration. The HCC student ID is then mailed to your permanent address.
  2. HCC Network is the HCC computer network. It is your access to technology resources through use of your HCC Network ID (username) and password. You can e-mail, perform coursework activities, and locate library resources. Refer to HCC Homepage - Online Education for further explanation.

How to Get Books

To find books Classic MnPALS or MnPALS Plus, the Library's catalog. You may search by author, title, subject or keyword.  You may select any or all MnPALS libraries in your search.

To check out, renew or request library books, you will need to use your 14-digit Library barcode number and password. The Library barcode number is located  on your HCC student ID. Your password is your last name, unless you have changed it. Remember: the Library barcode number and password are different from your HCC Network ID and password.

  • requesting books through interlibrary loan (ILL) - To request a book you have found in the MnPals catalog, simply click on the "Interlibrary Loan" button. You may ILL a book from HCC or other libraries. You may also use the online ILL Form to request a book.

You will be responsible only for the cost of returning the book to the HCC Library before the due date, using the pre-addressed return label that accompanies the book. Indicate if you would like the book sent to your home in the "notes" section of the ILL Form. Books not returned by the due date are subject to HCC Library Loan Policies.

How to Get Articles

You may find full-text articles in electronic format or you may request a photocopy of an article in print. To find articles, use EBSCO Host, a magazine database.

full-text online articles - Use EBSCO Host a magazine database,to find articles in the Library and full text of articles in periodicals and journals. You may search by author, title, subject or keyword. Remember:  not all articles are in full text online. Do not limit yourself to only those sources. You may also request a print copy of an article through interlibrary loan. Also check the HCC Periodicals List to determine if a periodical or journal title is available in the HCC Library.

requesting articles through interlibrary loan - To request an article that you have found in another database or that is not in full text online,  use the online ILL Form to request an article from another source, i.e. a bibliography, reference works page, etc. and email your request to :Phylissflannery@hibbing.edu.

delivery of articles - You may have a photocopy of an article delivered to your home. The Library will pay for the cost of one-way delivery to your home. You may keep the photocopy. Indicate if you would like the article sent to your home in the "notes" section of the online ILL Form.

How to Access Databases

HCC proxy service - In cooperation with the Library, MnSCU/PALS has developed a service that allows students who are off-campus to retain access to Library subscription data-bases and other resources that are normally only available to on-campus users.

what it does - Subscription databases are Library resources that are available, due to licensing conditions, on computers that are part of the HCC Networkt. A Proxy Service provides user access through an authentication process by using your HCC Library barcode and password.

how it works - When you find subscription resources from off-campus through the HCC Library Homepage, you will be prompted to enter your HCC Library barcode (username) and password (last name). Once you have logged in, you will be able to use library subscription resources freely - as though you were on campus.

How to Get Research Assistance

When you need help in any aspect of your research, there are many services and resources available by using the HCC Library Homepage. In addition, you may register for INFS 1000- Information Literacy . It provides instructions on how to use MnPALS, subscription databases, and the internet. For additional MnPALS instructions use the MnPALS Guide.

reference service - The library staff is available to assist students with their research, access to materials, and help in locating resources. There are two ways to contact the library staff - 1-800-224-4422 ext. 6746 or 1-218-262-6746.

resources - Subscription databases are listed on the HCC Library Homepage as 'Online Resources'. Not all databases are accessible off-campus. Other library catalogs are accessible via the HCC Library Homepage. Using the HCC Library Websites resource enables you to link directly to other authoritative web sources for information.

How to Access Reserve Materials

Reserve materials are supplemental course materials that some faculty require students to use. There are two ways to access and use reserve materials - print reserves and electronic reserves. Remember: not all classes use print or e-reserves.

print reserves - Search Classic MnPALS or MnPALS Plus for traditional print reserve items by typing the keyword "Course Reserves". Reserve items may be checked out at the Circulation Desk in the HCC Library. Instructions for students checking out reserve items are here. Instructions for faculty regarding placing items on reserve are available.

electronic reserves (e-reserves) - e-reserves provide online access to course reserve materials via the web. Remember: you can only access items through e-reserve if your instructor has made them available using e-reserve . Print items such as articles or book chapters are scanned in order to be made available electronically. As technical capabilities advance, audio and video resources can also be digitized and made available online. E-reserves are accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. E-reserve items are accessible to students on or off campus. Access to e-reserves is restricted to faculty and HCC students enrolled in HCC courses. Each item adheres to copyright law.  Instructions are available for both students and faculty.

When accessing from an off campus location you will be prompted to enter username (library barcode) and password (last name).
