Director Notes

Most of us would agree that America is a wonderful place to live. What is it that makes our country great? Or, perhaps more pointedly -- what is it that makes us who we are, and how did we get this way? The Kentucky Cycle is an exploration of the myths that have held this country together for over 200 years. We've been taught to believe that our success as a country was based on hard work, sacrifices to insure our children's future, a willingness to share, a sense of honesty and fair play, and perhaps more importantly, the judgment to always "do the right thing". Of course we all know that this is not entirely true, but enough of those beliefs have seeped into our collective subconscious that we have grown to accept them as the "truth". Playwright Robert Schenkkan suggests an entirely different truth for our success -- rugged individualism, a blatant disregard for those who stand in the way of progress and the subjugation of nature to the will of man. Whether you believe this to be the truth or not is nearly as important as a willingness to examine our own lives and past histories and come to an understanding of our place in the grand scheme of things.

The Kentucky Cycle is a series of nine chapters in the lives of three families over the course of two hundred years from 1775-1975. We watch as each generation bears witness to those who have gone before it, and endures the legacy of what it has inherited. Although the times and people change, the one constant in their continuing saga is the land -- the giver of life, the source of our initial happiness, and ultimate sorrow. It has been said that it is in our nature as human beings to reach for the stars; yet many times there are dark clouds that prevent us from seeing those stars. Tonight we hope to pull the veil of clouds away long enough to show what is possible.
