HCC splits weekend at Mesabi Tournament
The HCC Women's Basketball Team split their weekend games at the Mesabi Tournament. On Friday, Nov. 13 the Cardinals lost to Rainy River CC 63-75. On Saturday, the Cards posted their first win of the season 60-46 over St. Cloud Technical College.
Against Rainy River the Cards put 63 points on the board but fell to a taller Voyageur squad. The big difference was the 53-38 margin in rebounds. The Cardinals gave up too many second chances in the paint. Scoring was more balanced as Kelly Hams led the way with 26 points and Kelly Turk and Melissa Nyberg added 15 points each. Shannon Stenlund had 3 points and Brittaney Easley and Breanna Chamernick had 2 each. Hams sank 5 three-pointers, Nyberg and Turk had 3 each. The Cards shot 34 % from the field (22/65) and 7 of 14 from the free-throw line. The Cardinals took better care of the ball with only 19 turnovers (RR had 18). Nyberg led the team in rebounding with 12 while Chamernick and Hams each had 7. Assists- Chamernick 5, Turk 5, Hams 4, Nyberg 3. Steals - Turk 3, Chamernick 2, Hams 2, Nyberg 1. Blocked shots - Chamernick, Nyberg, Hams.
On Saturday against St. Cloud Tech, the Cardinals led 35-28 at the half then extended their lead to take the 60-46 victory. The Cardinals were cold in the shooting department making 19 of 79 shots for 24% from the field. From the line the Cardinals were 16 of 21 for 76%. Three Cardinals reached double figures in scoring - Kelly Hams led with 17 points, Britanney Easley had 12, and Melissa Nyberg had 10. Kelly Turk put in 9 points, Breanna Chamernick 6, Julie Petrangelo 4, and Shannon Stenlund 2. Hams had 3 three-pointers. The Cards took down 49 rebounds to 38 for St. CLoud. Chamernick hauled in 15 rebounds, Stenlund had 7, Petrangelo 6, Easley 6, Turk 5, Hams 5, Nyberg 4, White 1. Assists - Chamernick 9, Hams 4, Easley 3, Turk 2, Petrangelo 2, Stenlund 1, Nyberg 1. Steals - Turk 3, Petrangelo 2, Hams 2, Stenlund 2, Chamernick 2, Easley 2. Hams and Nyberg each had a blocked shot. The Cardinals cut down their turnovers committing only 11 while St. Cloud had 20.
The Cardinals are 1-3 overall. They will return to action on Fri., Nov. 27 at 5 pm when they face the Alumni. They will participate in the Gogebic CC Tournament Nov. 28 (vs. Milwaukeee Area Technical College at 1 pm) and Nov. 29.
HCC opens season at MN West Tournament
The HCC Cardinals opened their 2009-10 season at the MN West Tournament Nov. 6 & 7 with 2 loses.
On Friday night the Crdinals faced Riverland CC and lost 44-70. Halft time score was 21-36. The Cardinals successful volleyball season has hampered the start of the basketball season with not much time between seasons to swtich gears. The Cards shot 32% from the field , had 32 turnovers, and shot 12 of 19 free-throws. Kelly Hams led the Cardinals in scoring with 14 points. Melissa Nyberg had 10 points and Kelly Turk and Julie Petrangelo each had 6 points. Rebounding for the Cardinals were Nyberg with 11, Hams 7, Easley 4, Chamernick 4, Turk 4, Julie Petrangelo 4, Kelsey Wirtanen 2. Assists - Turk 6, Hams 3, Chmernick 2, Shannon Stenlund 2. Steals - Turk 4, Easley 3, Nyberg 2. Chamernick and Nyberg had 1 blocked shot each.
On Saturday, The Cardinals faced the host school, MN West CC, and lost 46-83. The Bluejays were ahead 41-21 at the half. Kelly Hams was the only Cardinal that scored in double figures with 24 points. The rest of the team scored 22 points - Kelly Turk 9, Melissa Nyberg 8, Shannon Stenlund 3, and Brittany Easley 2. The Cardinals were 10 of 17 from the free-throw line, and 18 of 57 (31%) from the field. They committed 27 turnovers. Hams and Nyber each had 2 three-pointers. Rebounds - Nyberg 10, Chamernick 6, Hams 5, Turk 2, Easley 2. Assists - Chamernick 5, Esley 3, Turk 3, Wirtanen 1. Steals - Stenlund 2, Turk 2, Easley 1. Blocked shots - Easley, Nyberg.
The Cards are 0-2 on the young season. They will travel to Virginia, Mn on Hov. 13 & 14 to participate in the Mesabi Range CC Tournament.
HCC Returns 4 Sophomores
The HCC Women's Basketball Team returns 4 sophomores to its roster for the 2009-10 season. Returning players are: Breanna Chamernick - a guard from Hibbing, Brittany Easley - a guard from Ironwood, MI, Kelly Hams - a forward from International Falls, MN, and Shannon Stenlund - a guard from Cherry, MN.

Incoming freshmen include Melissa Nyberg from Hibbing, Kasey Palmer from Floodwood, Julie Petrangelo from Hibbing, Kelly Turk fromAurora, MN, Kelsey Wirtanen, from Hibbing, and Brittany White from Hibbing.

Mike Turnbull will be at the helm of the Cardinals once again, starting his 3rd season coaching the women after 10 years coaching the HCC Men's Teams.
