Department/Program Description

Sociology is the scientific study of human behaviors as they are shaped by social interactions, within groups, organizations, societies, and the planet. This broad focus of study allows us to better understand not only what is going on in the world around us, but in our personal lives as well. Sociologists study a broad range to topics; some seemingly individualistic behaviors as suicide, as well as much broader topics such as the actions of international corporations. Regardless of the topic of interest, the focus of sociology is to understand how our interactions with others shape us and the world in which we live.

Transfer and Employment Opportunities

Sociology offers a useful perspective for thinking about the world and social interactions. This perspective is useful in almost any field of study or occupation. Sociology courses at HCC are part of the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MNTC) and will transfer to all MnSCU colleges and universities. HCC Sociology courses will also transfer to non-MnSCU colleges and universities on a course by course basis. Students are encouraged to meet with an academic advisor to explore transfer options.

Those who study sociology often work in areas as: corrections, social services, community work, customer service, public relations, business, government and teaching.
